Don’t worry as this article is not about the kind of headache that you get when you put a little bit too much on your credit card after spending a Saturday walking around Chinook Centre.
Every once in a while I have a migraine that usually starts with me seeing this weird kind of rainbow (technically named aura) floating around me and that sometimes even partially affects my ability to see what’s right in front of me. Once the aura is gone (usually less then 1 hour) then comes the big headache that sometimes bothers me from over one day. It’s not exactly a nice sensation.
Well, I just had one of these migraines this last Friday (October 19th) and what really amazed me was that I had at least three other people in the office mentioning that them or one of their relatives were also having the same symptom that day.
After reading a little bit more about the topic, it appears that some research indicates that these migraines may be triggered by the Chinook winds that help give calgarians a break from low temperatures during winter time.
It’s kind of interesting to mention that I don’t recall experiencing one of these migraines before I moved to Calgary.
Anybody out there experiencing similar symptoms?

When I moved to Calgary several years ago I remember a friend of mine telling me not to worry about the weather because it was going to change in 10 minutes.
The weather in Calgary can change very quickly and I have witnessed days where I have seen sunshine, rain, snow and back to sunshine and above zero temperatures in a matter of a few hours.
I find that Environment Canada provides one of the best and most reliable Calgary weather forecasts that I have seen around.
Their site offers not only extensive weather forecast information but also past weather data.
Talking about weather, here is snapshot of the weather in Calgary as I write this post (source of the image = Environment Canada).
I find the seasons in Calgary, with the exception of the winter, a little too short.
Summers’ hottest days are usually some time around end of July or early August with temperatures reaching something around 35 celsius sometimes.
Fall starts around mid September, even before the official end of summer, and is not very uncommon to see frost on early October or sometimes even on late September.
Winter can start any time after September and we usually have at least two or three weeks of some really cold weather (-20 C to -40 C) every year.
January and February are usually the coldest months but I have seem -30 C cold spells as late as end of March.
Even though -40 C can be very cold I haven’t seen that very often and I have been here for over 10 winters now.
The coldest I remember was December 15th, 2000 when the temperature was -26 and we got a crazy wind that drove the wind chill to -54 celsius.
Again, very rare but can happen.
It’s not uncommon though to get a good dump of wet snow sometime around mid May so Spring can be very short as well.
Leaves don’t usually start to turn green until mid to late May.
Weather in general is very dry, no matter what season you are in, and it does not snow very often even though we are pretty close to the mountains.
UV is high and it’s advisable to use sunscreen.
It’s been one hour since I started this post and I decided to get another temperature snapshot to give you an idea of how much the temperature dropped.
Here we go:
